This synth is the grandfather of the MiniMoog and it can create some extremely FAT bass sounds. The presets included dont cover all of what you can do with this synth, and it does have a somewhat steep learning curve. So if your too lazy to make your own sounds by patching wires the old school way, then you need to get the minimoog. Learning this behemoth, will give you bragging rights among your geeky synth buddies. If you want to make some seriously phat oldskool hiphop synth leads and basses, then you should snag this thing.

Arturia's Moog Modular V is an excellent and affordable way to experience the classic Modular Synthesizer. In short, modular synthesis was the birth of analog (and eventually digital) synthesis in which various task specific "modules" were linked together to create musical sounds. One module may consist of an oscillator, another may be the filter, an effect, an LFO, etc. Users would patch cables between them to route a signal from module to module in an effort to create musical sounds.
One of the absolute fathers of modular synthesizers was Moog's behemoth Modular series, and now Arturia has created a virtual synth based on the classic Moog series. The look, sound, feel, and experience have been emulated and improved upon here in Arturia's Moog Modular V, which is available for all popular soft-synth formats for Mac and PC (VST, DXi, Audio Units, MAS, RTAS, HTDM, and more).
Arturia uses "TAE" - True Analog Emulation to create a nice and warm and very close re-creation of the original Moog sound. It virtually eliminates any 'aliasing' caused by digital oscillators and even creates some of the instabilities associated with a genuine 'analog' sound. The MMV was developed with help from Bob Moog himself to insure an accurate recreation.
An original Moog Modular, though antique and hard to maintain and afford these days, was ultimately more customizable than this new soft-synth. Users could pick and choose which modules they wanted to install in their Moog's wooden cabinets, but Arturia's MMV comes with a pre-determined set of modules which can't be swapped out or changed, unfortunately. In fact, the MMV itself does not represent any particular modular system originally released by Moog either (such as the Moog 3P or 55), and rather comes with a collection of all-around useful modules selected from among Moog's history of modular synthesizers.
These modules include: 9 oscillators, 3 filter slots, 2 LFOs, 6 envelopes, VCAs, mixers, triggers, a 3x8 step-sequencer, etc. Patching is very much like the original method, but is color-coded for easier visual navigation. When you start drawing a patch, it's possible destinations are indicated on-screen too, and the cables will wobble, bounce and move out of the way of the mouse as you navigate. Unlike the original, you can also connect any output to multiple inputs for greater flexibility.
The nine oscillator modules are modelled after the Moog 921a and 921b oscillators which offer simultaneously available sine, triangle, sawtooth, and pulse waveforms. White and Pink noise is also available, based on the Moog 923 module. The three independent filter modules offer lowpass, highpass, filter coupler (band pass), and a new resonant multi-mode configuration. They sound great, although not quite the same as the original Moog, especially at high resonant frequencies. Additionally there's a filter bank modelled after the Moog 914 Filter bank, with 9 adjustable frequency bands (sort of a graphic/parametric EQ). There are 6 Aux ADSR envelope generators modelled after the Moog 911 envelopes as well as two main ADSR envelopes for the output amplifiers.
It is within this first window (pictured at top) that you can see, edit and patch all the modules responsible for creating and shaping your sounds. The second window (above) shows the step sequencer, effects sections, virtual keyboard, and any quick access global controllers. The sequencer is modelled after the Moog 960 sequencer module, with three rows of 8 steps (24 steps total); it's like three independent 8-step sequencers. Each row has it's own outputs and trigger inputs. The sequencer can be used to control the oscillators, envelopes, filters, etc. for very creative and animated sounds.
Above the virtual keyboard are some very cool controllers such as two X-Y Sound Controller joysticks, 3 Filter Cutoff knobs and two ADSR controls for the two main VCA's, and a flexible Keyboard Controller section to adjust pitch bend and modulation ranges and keyboard followers. These allow you to split or layer the keyboard zones, adjust and transpose tunings, and utilize portamento and legato effects. The effects offered are new (never available on the original Moog) and include a flexible Dual Delay and Stereo Chorus.
Additional modern day features include MIDI implementation, non-drifting oscillators and plenty of patch memory storage. In fact, the MMV ships with over 400 patches created by experienced sound designers and also has several template patches to get you started making your own patches! Although not a totally accurate re-creation of a particular Moog Modular, Arturia's MMV does emulate the look, feel, sound - the experience - of using a Moog Modular with modern day features quite well. And don't forget, it is endorsed by Bob Moog himself! It's the perfect tool for anyone interested in these classic machines or anyone wanting to learn about how synthesizers and all their individual components work together to create sounds.

If you want subtractive, additive, monophonic, duophonic, polyphonic, multiple oscillator waveforms, multiple LFO types, multiple filter types, multiple triggering modes, keyboard velocity response, integrated effects, an arpeggiator, filter overdrive, programming immediacy, a hefty patch library and the capability of producing a vast and varied range of sublime tonal textures, then the impOSCar really could be the only virtual synth you need!This is a bold claim, we know, but such has been the response to the impOSCar and our belief in it's ability to produce the highest quality sounds across an extensive tonal range, that it might not be so fanciful after all!
The impOSCar is modeled on the unique and wonderfully esoteric British synthesizer, the OSCar, manufactured between 1983 and 1986 and subsequently used to great effect by artists such as Ultravox, Jean-Michel Jarre, Stevie Wonder, Underworld, Orbital and even Oscar Peterson. Because it was released at the same time as MIDI and early affordable polyphonic synthesisers, the instrument wasn't a huge commercial success and only 2000 were produced before the company ceased trading.
However, to those in the know, OSCar has been a highly prized item and the secret weapon in many programmer's sonic arsenal. In a sea of monophonic subtractive synths available at that time it was unique and refreshing in many ways:
It looked interesting. It had an additive synthesis section. It had memories. It was duophonic and monophonic and, with the exception of the filter, it was all digital. All of these features contributed to its sound which could be summed up in one word- Awesome.
From sublime to screaming, from clean and clinical to phat as phuck, the OSCar did it all.
The impOSCar was two years in production and since its release it has become one of the most respected virtual synthesisers on the market. All the notable features of the original instrument are evident here as well as several enhancements including a more intuitive additive section, polyphony, increased LFO waveforms and a chorus and delay effects section.
The filters are a particular highlight of the impOSCar and features two stunning 12dB filters running in series, a filter overdrive and sublime separation control. In fact these filters are now so respected, ace instrument and sound design company Spectrasonics licensed them for use in their wonderful Stylus RMX.
With additive and subtractive synthesis, a huge number of potential waveforms on offer, a plethora of kick-ass filter modes and an intuitive design, the impOSCar is capable of a range of sounds far beyond that of any standard subtractive synthesiser.

Multiband Processing with Singleband Plug-ins?
You know about signal processing: EQ, compression, distortion, reverb . . . and it’s a beautiful thing. But multiband signal processing, which divides a signal into different frequency bands and applies processing to each band individually, takes the concept to the next level.
Probably the most common example is multiband compression, which typically splits a signal into three to five bands. This is used a lot with drums and program material (e.g., a mixed stereo signal), because single-band compression has limitations. For example, with drums, suppose you feed the drums through a compressor and there’s a strong kick hit. That causes compression to occur, and it affects the high-frequency sounds as well, such as hi-hats. With multiband compression, you could put drastic compression on the low-frequency kick drum, while adding only a slight amount of compression (or none) to other frequency ranges. When used with program material, multiband compression gives a less ”squashed,” more transparent sound.
Other Uses
Vocals are often split into high and low frequencies, then delay is added only to the higher frequencies. Thus the sibilant-rich sounds have echo, while the lower notes do not. If there's a fairly dense instrumental background, this technique avoids muddying up the midrange - the vocal echoes "float" over the other sounds.
The SPL-IZER is an adjustable 3 band 24db per octave FIR (Finite Impulse Response) frequency splitter that allows the three bands to be isolated and routed to aux or instrument tracks for separate processing.
The use of FIR filters ensures that no phase shifting occurs at the frequency split points. With this tool, one can use for example ones favorite single band compressor (let's say uhm.. Dynam-izer) and make it 3 band.

The Artist

A journey back in time
I started playing in my first serious band just when the record format shifted from vinyl to CD. With that first band we even managed to release a vinyl EP before CD took over.
After we made that EP, we made a bunch of recordings, both for a CD that we released and just some demos in the studio with the songs of the original EP in new versions. Every time we re-recorded those songs we tried capturing the feel of the first cut on that EP. We never succeeded. The new recordings always came out more competent than the originals but also a lot less emotional.
Before this turns into an article in any well-known rock mag where the thirtysomething rock journalist tries to delve into the mysteries of lost youth, I know you're asking yourself: in which way does this relate to presenting a software tool designed for converting audio recordings of drums to MIDI?
Well, back then, if only I (or we) had the means to capture both the sound and emotion of the original 8-track recordings of that EP, it seems obvious I could just have used this tool to regain the feeling of the moment caught on tape. By solely replacing the sounds, we could have achieved what we were looking for - a better sounding recording... at least for one part of the track.
With the tools that Toontrack Music and others have developed to make digital instruments sound like they came out of a full-on studio, when in fact they were produced on a laptop computer, the improved sound quality is easily achievable, undoubtedly.
The feeling is another thing. For that you need to go back to the original multi track recordings. Toontrack has endevored and will keep on striving in a direction where we can offer all components that a writer, performer, or producer might need to make better music.
Drumtracker is another step in that direction. So, whether you're a seasoned pro that works with replacing drums on an every day basis, or somebody who wants to update the sound but not the feeling of their classic garage recordings, go catch the feeling!

SSL G-Master Buss Compressor

SSL E-Channel

The Black Knob equalizer featured enhanced cut and boost ranges and a steeper 18dB/octave high pass filter for tighter control of low frequencies, as well as a smoother curve. The Split feature lets you position the low-pass and/or high-pass filters before the dynamics processors and put the filters in a dynamics sidechain for simple de-essing.
The dynamics section features a soft-knee compressor/limiter and an expander/gate modeled on the SSL LS611E. Like the original, it can be placed before or after the equalization section, and makeup gain is automatically applied to maintain a steady output level. The compressor's adjustable attack lets you choose between the default auto-sensing function which responds to your source material or a fixed 1 ms. attack time.
